Inspiring Gippsland Walks

INSPIRING GIPPSLAND WALKS

EXTRAORDINARY JOURNEYS

Stretching from the outskirts of Melbourne to the NSW border, Gippsland is an inspiring region that offers unparalleled natural experiences.

Iconic destinations such as Wilsons Promontory, the Gippsland Lakes and Australia’s Coastal Wilderness make up what is a premier offering of native wildlife, untouched Australian bush and some of the world’s most pristine beaches. There are few places in the world you will find such an extraordinary diversity of landscapes.

One of the nature-based highlights of the region is the Inspiring Gippsland Walks, a selection of 40 iconic walks, suiting every level of interest, from wild overnight adventures to leisurely afternoon strolls. From the fully guided Great Walhalla Alpine Trail (a three-day fully catered and guided sub-alpine walk finishing at Walhalla), to the two-kilometre Ah Fongs Loop (located on the Great Alpine Road, a touring route featuring Victoria’s alpine areas), the variety of experiences offer something for everyone.

Where better to start than Wilsons Promontory, a haven for nature lovers, just two hours south east of Melbourne. “The Prom” is home to awe-inspiring coastline, with granite headlands, stunning beaches and turquoise waters, as well as mountains, forests and fern gullies. Featured walks include the Mt Oberon Summit, a two hour mediumlevel summit walk that highlights spectacular views of the Promontory. The much loved
Lilly Pilly Gully Track is an easy 2-3-hour return walk, and the best place to view the local koalas.

For something a little more challenging, embark on a three-day adventure on the Great Prom Circuit Walk (53km) as you trek through ferny glades, white quartz beaches and sand dunes. Further to the east and accessed by the Sydney-Melbourne Coastal Drive is East Gippsland. Breathtaking in its natural beauty, East Gippsland is home to the Gippsland Lakes, Australia’s Coastal Wilderness and the iconic villages of Metung and Lakes Entrance. It offers spectacular scenery, rugged alpine and coastal landscapes, some of Australia’s most renowned old-growth forests and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest lake system. One of the most challenging walks in the region is the Wilderness Coastal Walk. Boasting a spectacularly wild walk through Australia’s Coastal Wilderness, the 45km trail, takes three days one-way and passes through expanses of isolated beaches and small coves in one of the most remote and pristine national parks in East Gippsland.

The walks are only a snapshot of what you will find when you visit Gippsland. No matter your tastes, Inspiring Gippsland Walks offers something to ignite your senses and encourage your inner adventurer. As you walk your way across Gippsland, you’ll be inspired to keep coming back.
Watch out for the free Inspiring Gippsland Walks iphone application. The app features interactive maps, walking times and distances, and driving directions to 40 of Gippsland’s most iconic walks. Guided tours are also available for many of the walks, with further details available from the Regional Tourism Board, Destination Gippsland.
